A major fire is currently raging in the High Fens, in the heart of the East Cantons. Several areas within the municipalities of Baelen, Malmedy, Waimes and Jalhay are subject to access restrictions to enable the fire fighters, emergency services and all the teams deployed to carry out their work under the best possible conditions.
We therefore ask cyclists and users of the junction node network not to enter the affected areas and to strictly respect the safety perimeters and the instructions issued by the authorities, so as not to hinder the ongoing operations.
Several sites and water points located near the affected area are also subject to access restrictions.
Robertville lake is currently closed to all activities to allow helicopters involved in fire-fighting operations to collect water from it.
The access roads and car parks at the Gileppe Dam and the Vesdre Dam in Eupen are also closed to facilitate the ongoing operations.
Consequently, several signposted routes in the East Cantons are currently affected.
The trails listed below are therefore temporarily inaccessible as they are located in areas currently off-limits to facilitate the work of the emergency services:
Furthermore, several other trails are closed for an indefinite period, as some paths have been directly affected by the fire:
This list is subject to change as the fire spreads and access conditions change.
We therefore encourage you to check our junction node planner regularly to find out which areas of the “points-nœuds” network are inaccessible and, consequently, which trails are not available.
To keep up to date with the latest information on the situation and the measures taken by the authorities, please check the website of the Governor of the Province of Liège and the Governor’s Facebook page regularly.
As the situation is developing rapidly, the information is likely to be updated regularly.
Thank you for your understanding and, above all, for not entering restricted areas so as not to hinder the work of the fire fighters and the emergency personnel.
